Why Ephesus matters
Ephesus is one of the strongest cultural stops in western Turkey. The ancient city reflects Hellenistic, Roman Imperial and early Christian periods, and UNESCO describes it as an exceptional testimony to those cultural traditions.
How to get to Ephesus
From Istanbul
The easiest route is usually a flight from Istanbul to Izmir, then a transfer, train or bus toward Selçuk. This works well if you are combining Istanbul + Ephesus + Pamukkale.
From Izmir
Izmir is the main airport hub. From there, Selçuk is the practical town for Ephesus access.
From Kuşadası
Kuşadası is a popular coastal base, especially for cruise and summer travelers. It is also useful if you want to combine ruins with beach time.
Half-day Ephesus itinerary
- Enter early to avoid the strongest heat and crowds.
- Walk the main marble streets and focus on the Library of Celsus, theatre area and Curetes Street.
- Add the Terrace Houses if you want more detail and have extra time.
- Continue to Selçuk for the Ephesus Museum, Ayasuluk Hill or local food.
What to see near Ephesus
- Selçuk: the easiest base for independent travelers.
- House of the Virgin Mary: a common side trip.
